New Featured Wines By The Glass
Most people who enjoy wine are familiar with the popular varietals. Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc rule the white wines, while Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot dominate the red wine territory. There is, however, an entire world of other interesting and appealing alternatives to discover.
Gruet Brut is an impressive sparkling wine produced of all places in New Mexico. The initial reaction has been "New Mexico--wine?" But the quality is remarkable. The Blanc De Noir designation tells us that the wine has been produced from Pinot Noir grapes giving it a richer taste and deeper color. Excellent way to begin any meal.
Marques De Alella is a refreshing Spanish white wine produced from local grapes grown exclusively in the region of Alella. The style of this wine can be compared to Sauvignon Blanc but without being overly "grassy" or herbaceous. People who enjoy Pinot Grigio will also appreciate this selection.
Pinot Blanc from Austria? Why not? The Hopler family has done a great job producing this 1995 reserve bottling of Pinot Blanc. The wine comes across as slightly off-dry which will please the palates of those wine enthusiasts who also enjoy drinking Riesling, Vouvray, or perhaps Gewurztraminer.
Deakin Estate Shiraz is the typical representation of well-made Australian Shiraz. It is soft and supple with mild tannins. This wine is very versatile and can be enjoyed with a variety of dishes from chicken to beef tenderloin. Even though summer is usually associated with increase in white wine consumption there is always room for a delicious glass of a hearty red. The next two offerings are worthy of anyone's attention. Rancho Zabaco Zinfandel was made from old vines grown in the Dry Creek Valley of Sonoma and was bottled without filtration. The wine is intense in both color and flavor. Nuances of dense blackberry fruit and spice unfold with each taste. The other powerhouse red is a Cabernet Sauvignon made by Gallo of Sonoma. The grapes come from a single vineyard located within Alexander Valley, Sonoma, named Barrelli Creek. Be careful not to judge this wine until you give it a try. If you have any misconceptions about the quality of the fine wines produced by the largest winery in the world this one is sure to realign your opinion in a pleasant way.
